This is unconventional - making it perfect for the Lynchian love story that plays out in Wild at Heart. Something notable about this bassline is that it doesn’t play out like you might expect a walking bassline to instead it seems to loop back on itself in an almost cyclical refrain. One of the other Badalamenti compositions for the film, “Cool Cat Walk”, is a more typically jazz-oriented affair, with an identifiably Badalamenti walking bassline. Although very few themes throughout the film are composed by Badalamenti in comparison to some of Lynch’s other productions, similarly to Lost Highway, the compositions on there really go the distance. As Sailor ( Nicolas Cage) and Lula ( Laura Dern) cruise through the desert at sunset, the theme frames the moment perfectly, creating an unforgettable, multi sensory experience. “Dark Spanish Symphony” is one of the most beautiful pieces of music for screen ever written. For example, hearing “Dub Driving” and “Fats Revisited” blare while pounding down the titular Lost Highway captures a moment so superbly that it could only be a product of Badalamenti and Lynch’s gorgeous work. When Badalamenti’s work is present, though, it’s incredibly effective. There are fewer Badalamenti compositions on the soundtrack of this movie, with an emphasis being placed on other musicians’ contributions to the soundtrack also, including the soundtrack’s co-creator, Barry Adamson, Rammstein, and producer Trent Reznor. The riff sounds completely unhinged, erratically continuing beyond the end of the rest of the track, capturing the way his character arc too goes completely off-the-rails throughout the course of the film’s events. The sax run becomes a leitmotif for his character throughout the soundtrack, embedded into core moments throughout the movie. ![]() Near the beginning of the film, we see his character at a gig, playing a wailing riff as a part of the track “Red Bats with Teeth”. The Heart Is A Monster is out 6/30 via INgrooves’ INresidence label. One of the core characters in Lost Highway, Fred Madisen ( Bill Pullman), is a saxophonist. ![]() And then, production-wise, there’s a little bit of Flaming Lips in there some of the drums are in homage to the stuff Steven did in the Lips. It’s really that triangle of awesomeness, basically. Someone was even yelling out in the crowd the other night, “Play that Pink Floyd Beatles song!” It’s also late-Sixties Beach Boys, too. With a lot of our songs, it’s not that easy to track what our direct influences are, but that one is not one of those songs. It was a fairly intact demo that Greg brought in, and it stuck out to me as something I could really sink my teeth into, in terms of producing and singing on it. To me, “Mulholland Dr.” is kind of the sister song to “The Nurse Who Loved Me” on Fantastic Planet. What can you tell us about “Mulholland Dr.”? Failure’s Ken Andrews told Dan Epstein about the inspiration behind the track: The Heart Is A Monster will be out at the end of this month, and follows two singles that were released during their tour, “ Come Crashing” and “ The Focus.” We’ve already heard the forthcoming record’s first single, “ Hot Traveler,” and today, Rolling Stone published an interview with the band along with a new song. ![]() In 2014, Failure played their first show since their 1997 breakup, and they also began plotting a reunion album. ![]()
